In 2007, at the edge of a misty forest on the tiny Maine island of Isle au Haut, Black Dinah Chocolatiers twinkled into existence. For eight years, Kate Shaffer made exquisite confections in her home kitchen, and offered them to locals and island visitors at her cafe, which rested in the shade of a dark, towering crag, known locally as Black Dinah Mountain. Organically (and some say, by magic), word of Kate’s chocolates—made from things that grew in the forests and the gardens of Isle au Haut—spread, and the fledgling business grew…and grew…and grew.

In 2012, Black Dinah Chocolatiers’ first mainland Tasting Room took root in Blue Hill, Maine—a salty, coastal village nestled in a quiet pocket of the Penobscot Bay. There, we offer our full line of chocolate confections, which are complemented by a full espresso bar, locally-made ice cream, and our signature cookies.

In 2015, with the help and support of their neighbors and friends on Isle au Haut, Kate ( along with her partner Steve and two cats) packed up their island kitchen, and moved their blossoming business south, to Westbrook, Maine.

Here, we continue to craft beautiful chocolates by hand, and offer them for sale on the premises at our pocket-sized Factory Store.

At Black Dinah, we make all of our confections with fresh cream and butter from local farms. We buy or trade for fresh herbs, fruits, vegetables, and edible flowers with Maine farmers and gardeners we’ve met along the way—at farmers’ markets, on the road, in our shops, or on their farms. We use premium teas, organic, locally roasted coffee, and whole spices to flavor our confections. And we source single origin, sustainably-grown chocolates from producers that not only make the best chocolate in the world, but also treat their growers, harvesters, and the flora and fauna on their lands, with respect.
